Land vulnerability mapping

MoSSaiC is undertaking an application of slope stability inventory methods to agricultural areas as well as to highways and urban areas. In this context we are sourcing and collating previous work to assist in the process of defining appropriate pilot areas for investigation. For example, the work of Christopher Cox [Ministry of Agriculture] has helped MoSSaiC to focus on two specific locations to trial the slope stability inventory methodology. Geographical Information System [GIS] methods of data layer overlays and intersections were used to define a conflict matrix to identify compatibility of current land uses with recommended land management regimes:

Such a methodology allows a preliminary spatial assessment to be made such that zones of greatest conflict can be the subject of more detailed investigation using the slope inventory and subsequent slope stability modelling approach configured for the MoSSaiC programme.
